Kedartal Lake Trek – A Complete Guide to the High-Altitude Himalayan Adventure

···—

The Kedartal Lake Trek is one of the most demanding yet rewarding high-altitude treks in the Indian Himalayas. Located at an altitude of 16,116 feet, this trek begins from the holy town of Gangotri and leads to the pristine Kedartal Lake. Moreover, the trail offers breathtaking views of iconic peaks such as Thalay Sagar, Bhrigupanth, and the Jogin group. Because of its rugged terrain and high elevation, the trek is classified as moderate to difficult and is best suited for well-prepared trekkers.

In addition, the trek is known for its raw and untouched landscapes. Starting from Gangotri, trekkers pass through dense alpine forests, scenic meadows, and rocky moraines. Eventually, the trail opens up to the stunning Kedartal Lake, also known as Shiva’s Lake. Surrounded by towering mountains, the lake provides a serene and spiritually uplifting experience.

Introduction

The Kedartal Lake Trek takes adventurers through some of the most dramatic terrains in the Garhwal Himalayas. To begin with, the journey starts from Gangotri, a small yet significant town in the Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand. From there, the route gradually ascends through forests, streams, and challenging rocky sections. As a result, trekkers experience a steady gain in altitude before finally reaching the lake.

Best Time to Visit Kedartal Trek

Choosing the right season is crucial for a safe and enjoyable trek. Ideally, the best time to visit Kedartal Trek is between May and June and September and October. During these months, the weather remains relatively stable, and the skies are mostly clear.

On the other hand, trekking during the monsoon season, which falls between July and August, is not recommended. This is because heavy rainfall makes the trail slippery and significantly increases the risk of landslides. Therefore, planning the trek during the recommended months ensures better safety and visibility.

Kedartal Trek Route & How to Reach

Reaching the starting point of the Kedartal Trek is fairly convenient. Firstly, the nearest airport is Jolly Grant Airport in Dehradun, while the nearest railway station is Dehradun Railway Station. After arriving in Dehradun, travelers can hire a taxi or take a bus to reach Gangotri.

Once the trek begins, the 19 km trail from Gangotri leads through lush green forests, steep climbs, rocky terrain, and snow-covered mountain sections. Along the way, trekkers witness spectacular Himalayan views that make the journey as rewarding as the destination itself.

Difficulty Level and Fitness Requirements

The Kedartal Trek is considered a difficult trek, primarily due to its high altitude and challenging trail conditions. For instance, the route includes steep ascents, sharp descents, rocky paths, and glacial stream crossings. Additionally, the thin air at higher altitudes can cause altitude sickness.

Itinerary

Explore to Gangotri

  • Your journey begins with an early morning drive from Rishikesh to the holy town of Gangotri, the roadhead for the Kedartal trek. The picturesque route winds alongside the Bhagirathi River, passing through charming towns like Uttarkashi and Harsil. Upon reaching Gangotri (approx. 10,200 ft), check into your guesthouse or hotel. The evening is reserved for acclimatization and a visit to the revered Gangotri Temple, one of the Char Dhams of Uttarakhand
Acclimatization Day

  • To prepare your body for the high altitudes to come, this day is dedicated to acclimatization. You can explore the serene surroundings of Gangotri, take short hikes to nearby viewpoints, or simply relax by the gushing river. This crucial day will significantly improve your chances of a successful and enjoyable trek.
 Start Trekking Trail

  • The much-awaited trek commences today. After a hearty breakfast, you will start your ascent towards Bhoj Kharak (approx. 12,500 ft). The trail is steep and challenging right from the beginning, passing through dense forests of pine and birch (Bhojpatra) trees, from which the campsite derives its name. The constant sound of the Kedar Ganga river flowing below will be your companion. Upon reaching the campsite, settle in and soak in the magnificent views of the surrounding peaks.
The Trekking Trail

  • Today's trek is shorter but more demanding. The path becomes rocky and steep, requiring careful footing. You will climb gradually above the tree line, passing moraines and alpine meadows. The air gets thinner, and the temperature drops, but the stunning mountain panorama keeps spirits high.
Explore Kedartal (4,859m)

  • This is the most anticipated day of the trek. You will start early for the final push to Kedartal. The trail is predominantly over moraines and rocky terrain, which can be challenging to navigate. As you climb higher, the breathtaking vista of snowclad peaks unfolds. The first glimpse of the pristine, emerald-green Kedartal, with the reflection of the mighty Thalaysagar peak in its crystal-clear waters, is a sight to behold. After spending some quality time at the lake, you will retrace your steps back to the Kedar Kharak campsite for the night.
Back To Gangotri

  • The descent back to Gangotri begins today. While it is a downhill trek, it can be demanding on the knees. You will retrace the same path, passing through Bhoj Kharak. Upon reaching Gangotri, check into your accommodation and celebrate the successful completion of your trek.
Departure Day

  • After breakfast, you will bid farewell to the majestic Himalayas and embark on the
scenic drive back to Dehradun / Rishikesh. Expect to reach Dehradun / Rishikesh by late evening,
carrying with you memories of a lifetime.
  • Departure.
