Starting Point of Awana Bugyal Trek

The trek begins from Jhala village, situated at an altitude of 9,580 feet. Notably, Jhala is well connected by road from Uttarkashi, which is approximately 68 km away.

From Jhala, the trail gradually ascends through remote mountain terrain, offering a peaceful start to the trekking journey.

 

Trail Experience and Scenic Beauty

As the trek progresses, it takes you through dense forests of oak and rhododendron trees. In addition, the trail is dotted with small streams and seasonal waterfalls that enhance the overall beauty of the route.

Furthermore, as you gain altitude, breathtaking views of snow-capped Himalayan peaks such as Bandarpoonch and the Gangotri range start to appear, making the climb truly rewarding.

 

Awana Bugyal – The Highlight of the Trek

Awana Bugyal is a vast alpine meadow located at an altitude of around 14,436 feet. Surrounded by towering mountain peaks, the meadow offers panoramic views of the valley below.

The bugyal is rich in biodiversity and is home to colorful wildflowers, butterflies, and Himalayan birds. During the summer months, the meadow comes alive with vibrant shades of green and flowers.

 

Difficulty Level and Best Time to Visit

The Awana Bugyal trek is considered a moderate-difficulty trek and usually takes 6 to 7 days to complete.

Generally, the best time to visit is from April to June, September to November and December to March However, during the monsoon season, the trail can become slippery and challenging.

Arrival at Jhala – Trek Starting Point
 
  • Depart early morning from Rishikesh. The scenic drive passes through Chamba, Uttarkashi, and Harsil Valley, following the Bhagirathi River. Reach Jhala village (9,580 ft) by evening. Check into a local homestay or guesthouse. Trek briefing and preparation for the next day.
Forest Trail & Water Streams
 
  • After breakfast, begin the trek from Jhala village. The trail gradually ascends through dense forests of oak and rhododendron. Along the way, cross small streams and enjoy peaceful forest surroundings. Reach Dahi Gaad /   Kanasar campsite by afternoon. Evening at leisure.
  • Overnight stay in tents.
Meadows & Mountain Views
 
  • Start trekking after breakfast. The trail continues through alpine forests and open clearings. As you gain altitude, stunning views of surrounding Himalayan peaks begin to appear. Reach Awana Base Camp by late afternoon. Enjoy the serene mountain environment.
  • Dinner and overnight stay in tents.
Reach the Alpine Meadow
 
  • Today’s trek leads you to the beautiful Awana Bugyal (14,436 ft). The trail opens into vast alpine meadows surrounded by towering mountain peaks. Upon reaching the bugyal, enjoy panoramic views of Bandarpoonch and the Gangotri range. Explore the meadow and relax amidst nature.
  • Overnight stay at Awana Bugyal campsite.
Descent Through Forest Trails
 
  • After breakfast, begin the descent back towards Jhala village via the same route. Walk through lush meadows, forests, and mountain trails while enjoying the last views of the Himalayas. Reach Jhala by evening. Check into a homestay.
  • Dinner and overnight stay.
Departure Day 
 
  • After an early breakfast, start the return journey to Rishikesh. Enjoy the scenic drive through Harsil Valley and Uttarkashi. Reach Rishikesh by evening, marking the end of the Awana Bugyal Trek.
